As part of our Art curriculum, we are learning about different types of art and ways to express yourself. We are so grateful that artist Dawn Godfrey with “Mural, Mural On The Wall” shared her talents with us. What a fantastic hands-on learning experience for our Creative Tots! This month’s in class Art Enrichment took us on a journey exploring the artwork of Romare Bearden.
Romare Bearden is among the preeminent artists of his generation. His powerful works represent the places where he lived and worked: the rural South; northern cities, principally Pittsburgh and New York’s Harlem; and the Caribbean island of St. Martin. Throughout his career Bearden also made forays into abstraction, usually with musical associations. His work includes not only collages and Projections (photostats) for which he is best known but also a selection of watercolors, gouaches, and oils, many of which have rarely been exhibited.
Take a look at the work of Romare Bearden below. You can also click here to visit the Romare Bearden Foundation to explore the influence Bearden had on art and community.
Our Art Tots discovered all about Bearden’s work. We discussed how some artists use recycled materials to create their artwork. Sometimes making something new out of discarded pictures and/or objects can create the most beautiful artwork. Art Tots explored the collages Bearden made of the people and places he encountered on a daily basis. In this we discussed how “Urban Artists” often found the most interesting subjects by simply looking out their own window. We also discussed how each of us have the same number of eyes, noses, mouths and ears but we are all unique. Art Tots discovered that the world would be a very boring place if everyone looked exactly the same.
With this thought in mind, Art Tots created this month’s art project as a collage of facial features from all of our preschool friends. Preschool and Pre-K classes explored the correct proportion and placement of facial features as the Early 3 and Toddler classes concentrated on the abstractions of the face. Take a look below Romare Bearden’s examples to see the outstanding work of our Art Tots! They are a talented bunch!!
Don’t forget that I am holding on to our Art Tots work from in class Art Enrichment to display in our fabulous Art Show in March. Mark your calendars for this unforgettable event.
